Candidemia in a Preterm Neonate at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, South West, Nigeria

Abstract

ABSTRACT: A 36-week-old male preterm low birth weight infant was diagnosed with candidemia at a tertiary hospital in South-West Nigeria. The mother had antepartum and untreated intrapartum vaginal candidiasis. The delivery of the baby was per vaginal with the head presenting. The baby developed features of neonatal sepsis shortly after delivery, which did not respond to the conventional antibiotics used locally for the management of neonatal sepsis. Candida albicans was later isolated from the baby's blood culture. Subsequently, the baby made remarkable improvement to oral fluconazole therapy thereafter. The case is presented with a view to highlight the peculiarities of the case and factors which can aid in prompt recognition and effective management of future cases.
