Broadband Seismics for Deep Mineral Exploration at South Deep Gold Mine, South Africa

Abstract

Summary To image deep-seated gold-bearing deposits and complex geological structures at the South Deep gold mine in South Africa, a broadband seismic acquisition approach was utilized. Two orthogonal reflection seismic profiles were acquired using a mini vibrator as the seismic source and WiNG nodal sensors as the receivers. The two seismic profiles were processed following a conventional workflow, with a focus on preserving the excellent broadband frequency content of the data. Despite its relatively short lateral extent, Profile P2 was able to image deep-seated geological features, demonstrating the benefits of the broadband seismic technology. The use of a broadband seismic source and high-fidelity WiNG nodal sensors enabled high-resolution imaging of the subsurface, including potential gold-bearing horizons and complex geological structures at the South Deep gold mine. This broadband seismic approach proved crucial for accurately mapping the subsurface, which is essential for efficient and safe mining operations in this challenging hardrock environment.
