Bridging the Epistemological Gap Between Solar Weather and Influenza Outbreaks: Insights from Complex Systems, Causal Loop Modeling, and 2,400 Years of Historical Evidence

Abstract

Despite substantial advances in infectious disease research, the timing of influenza pandemic emergence remains under-explored. This study applies a complex systems perspective to examine whether heliophysical variability may represent one component of a broader network influencing pandemic emergence. A qualitative systems framework based on Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) integrated evidence from heliophysics, atmospheric science, ecology, virology, and epidemiology with historical influenza and SARS-CoV outbreaks spanning approximately 2,400 years, together with long-term solar and geomagnetic records and modern space-weather observations. The resulting framework describes multiple interconnected feedback pathways linking solar variability, geomagnetic activity, atmospheric processes, ecological interactions, and host susceptibility. Within this framework, heliophysical variability may contribute to geomagnetic perturbations capable of disrupting magnetoreception and migratory navigation, thereby altering host movement, increasing opportunities for interspecies contact, viral reassortment, and ultimately antigenic shift. Historical synthesis identified recurring temporal associations between major outbreaks and periods of reduced solar activity across both grand and 11-year solar cycles. These findings support the value of a systems-based approach for investigating pandemic emergence while generating testable hypotheses for future observational and mechanistic studies.
