Bridging Financial Literacy and Regulatory Gaps for Generation Z in MENA's Platform Economy

Abstract

This study examines the digital economic empowerment of Generation Z in the MENA region, focusing on financial literacy gaps and regulatory challenges in platform-based markets. Using a mixed-methods approach combining literature review, legal analysis, and secondary data, the research explores Gen Z's economic participation across Morocco and the broader MENA context. Findings reveal high engagement in social commerce and gig activities, but fragmented financial literacy, particularly regarding Islamic finance and algorithmic pricing. Regulatory frameworks show emerging efforts to protect young entrepreneurs, yet enforcement gaps and platform dominance persist, reinforcing economic vulnerability. Comparative insights highlight regional disparities, with MENA youth facing structural constraints such as weak legal protection and economic instability. Despite these challenges, digital mobilization reflects their growing agency.
