Blockchain–SDN‐Based Secure Architecture for Multi‐Edge Computing in Industrial IoT

Abstract

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) stands at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution promising unprecedented advancements in automation and efficiency. However, the rapid proliferation of IIoT devices has accentuated the need for robust, scalable, and secure architectures to manage vast data volumes in real time. This paper introduces an innovative integration of blockchain and software-defined networking (SDN) to address these challenges. The synergy of blockchain's immutable ledgers with SDN's centralized network management offers a comprehensive solution that ensures data security, trust, and real-time processing. Our research underscores the architecture's resilience against formidable cyber threats, such as DDoS attacks, and its scalability in multi-edge computing environments. Furthermore, we provide insights into potential future enhancements and the real-world challenges of implementing such an architecture. This study contributes significantly to the ongoing discourse on IIoT highlighting the transformative potential of integrating blockchain and SDN for a secure and efficient industrial future.
