book chapter
Biomedical polymers have played a transformative role in modern medicine, driving innovation in drug delivery, tissue engineering and medical devices. These materials are classified as natural or synthetic and possess unique properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical versatility. Natural polymers support cellular functions and tissue regeneration, while synthetic polymers allow precise control of degradation rates and mechanical properties. Polymers have facilitated the controlled delivery of drugs through polymer-drug conjugates and stimulant systems, enabling targeted and sustained release. However, challenges such as toxicity, immune responses and regulatory hurdles remain. By exploring their applications, challenges and future prospects, this chapter has shed light on the essential role of biomedical polymers in advancing personalized medicine, regenerative therapies and smart medical devices.
