Bibliometric analysis of innovative technology use in sustainable facilities management for smart city development

Abstract

Purpose In Africa, technological adoption in facility management (FM) is hindered by knowledge gaps, high costs and outdated infrastructure. This study aims to examine the role of innovative technology in sustainable FM (SFM) for Smart Cities through a bibliometric analysis to identify trends, themes and gaps. Design/methodology/approach A bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus as the primary data source, covering publications from 2014 to 2024. Data was analysed using VOSviewer to visualise publication networks, keyword clusters and citation relationships. A systematic search and content analysis were applied to ensure relevant document inclusion and thematic exploration. Findings Research interest in this field has grown significantly since 2021, with the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, digital twin and building information modelling emerging as dominant technologies. China leads in publications, while Spain has the highest citation impact. However, international collaboration remains weak, particularly in Africa highlighting the need for stronger interdisciplinary research networks. Originality/value This study contributes to the discourse on digital transformation in FM and smart cities by mapping technological advancements and their impact. It outlines future research and suggestions for SFM development in Africa.
