Beam-Steerable Antenna Array with Broadband and Compact Resonators for MM - Wave Communications

Abstract

This paper explores the features of an innovative antenna design that incorporates low-profile and broadband resonators, specifically optimized for advanced fifth generation (5G) cellular communication systems. The proposed approach is straightforward and can be effectively integrated into the mainboard of future mobile devices. The design includes eight bow-tie-ring resonators with microstripline feeding, arranged in a 1 ×8 linear configuration on the top of a smartphone board. It operates from 22 GHz to 40 GHz, achieving a −10 dB reflection coefficient that encompasses several critical bands within the 5G spectrum. Beyond the simplicity of its design, this phased array antenna also emphasizes essential radiation characteristics, ensuring it meets the varied demands of next-generation networks.
