Awareness of parents and dentists regarding the optimum timing of orthodontic intervention: a cross-sectional survey, Alexandria, Egypt

Abstract

Abstract Background Early orthodontic intervention can significantly improve treatment outcomes and quality of life. This study aimed to assess the awareness and attitudes of parents and dental practitioners regarding the optimal timing of orthodontic intervention in Alexandria, Egypt. Patients and methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted using structured questionnaires distributed to 998 parents and 247 dental practitioners. Data were collected on demographics, knowledge of optimal intervention timing, and attitudes toward early orthodontic treatment. Statistical analysis was performed using χ 2 tests. Results Among parents, 34.2% suggested 7–8 years as the optimal age for the first orthodontic check-up, while 23.4% believed there was no specific ideal age. Financial considerations (45.4%) were the primary deterrent to seeking treatment. Among dental practitioners, 58.1% recommended initial check-ups at 7–8 years. For dental malocclusions, the most favored intervention was at 9–11 years, while the earlier intervention was preferred for skeletal malocclusions. Notably, 72.1 and 60% of dentists endorsed early intervention for anterior and posterior crossbites, respectively. Conclusion The study revealed varied perspectives on optimal orthodontic intervention timing among parents and dental practitioners. Findings highlight the need for improved communication between professionals and parents, addressing financial barriers, and enhancing public education about early orthodontic assessment benefits.
