Awareness and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for improved research productivity among librarians in Nigerian universities

Abstract

This study investigated the awareness and responsible use of AI tools for improved research productivity among librarians in Nigerian universities. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The population comprised 50 librarians who participated in a “Responsible Use of AI for Writing” workshop organized by Upskill and Connect Village. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings revealed a high level of awareness of AI tools among librarians (84%). ChatGPT emerged as the most frequently used AI tool, while specialized research-oriented AI applications were underutilized. Respondents demonstrated strong support for ethical practices, particularly transparency, disclosure of AI use, and human oversight of AI-generated outputs. Major barriers identified included inadequate training, lack of awareness of advanced tools, poor internet connectivity, cost of AI tools, and fear of plagiarism. Significant differences in AI tool usage were observed based on gender and age, whereas educational qualification and years of experience showed no significant influence. The study concludes that AI has considerable potential to improve librarians’ research productivity when supported by adequate training, ethical guidelines, institutional support, and improved digital infrastructure. The study recommends continuous AI literacy programs, stronger ethical governance frameworks, and enhanced access to AI technologies in academic libraries.
