Atmospheric boundary layer physics and the climate Dr Ossénatou Mamadou explores the significance of the atmospheric boundary layer in relation to climate change, underscoring the importance of direct observations in comprehending land-atmosphere interactions and its implications for climate dynamics. Climate change is now recognized as one of the most critical global challenges of the current century. It remains an emergency because of its multiple impacts on Earth’s living systems. The Earth is an interconnected complex system composed of interacting components; the climate of any area results from interactions among these components. Understanding and predicting processes occurring within the ‘Earth System’ relies on both models and observations, yet each has distinct uncertainties. Models are often limited by initial- condition errors arising from the scarcity of observations in the lowest atmosphere, as well as by structural limitations in physical parameterizations that may misrepresent key processes governing, among others, land-atmosphere interactions.
