Assessment of early risk factors of atherosclerosis in patients with psoriatic arthritis

Abstract

Background Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is classified as a form of chronic inflammatory arthritis. Atherosclerosis is primarily triggered and exacerbated by the initial inflammatory response. Early detection of atherosclerosis in PsA may help develop interventions for the prompt identification and better management patients. Aim Assessing the probability of early atherosclerotic changes in PsA patients Patients and methods A total of 60 PsA patients who satisfied the ClASsification criteria for Psoriatic Arthritis and forty control subjects who underwent a thorough medical history, physical examination, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein testing were the patients of a case-control study. Using the disease activity in psoriatic arthritis score, disease activity is assessed. All patients and controls had their flow-mediated dilatation of brachial artery evaluated and measurement of carotid intima-media thickness. Results There was no discernible difference between the two studded groups based on their demographic data. PsA patients were 33.4±6.03 years old on average. The mean of BMI was 27.02±1.7 kg/m 2 . With P values of 0.015 and 0.005, respectively, patients with PsA had shown statistically significant decreases in brachial artery flow mediated dilatation when compared with control group. There is statistically significant increased CIMT in PsA patients compared with control group. Conclusion The study concludes to that PsA correlates with a heightened risk of early atherosclerotic changes and cardiovascular disease.
