Assessing the Effect of Demographic Characteristics on Knowledge Sharing Practices among Open and Distance Learning Students in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

Knowledge sharing is crucial in distance learning education, as it enhances teaching, learning and students' performance. This study investigates the effect of demographic characteristics on knowledge sharing practices among distance learners in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive research design. Two distance education centres were selected: LAUTECH Open and Distance Learning Centre and University of Ibadan Distance Learning Centre (LODLC and UIDLC). Simple random sampling was used to determine the sample size of 248 respondents. The instrument's reliability was confirmed through Cronbach's Alpha testing, which yielded high reliability coefficients (0.76, 0.8, and 0.91) for factors and behaviours influencing knowledge sharing and the challenges encountered. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and paired samples correlation. Results show that most respondents were male, aged 21-30, and in 400 level and were mainly from LODLC, studying Accounting, followed by Library and Information Science at UIDLC. This study concludes that knowledge sharing among distance learners is influenced by self-satisfaction, self-efficacy and social rewards. However, personal, behavioural and technological constraints hinder knowledge-sharing practices among open and distance learning students in Oyo State. Investment in infrastructure, training and improved access to the Internet can influence distance learners to cultivate a positive knowledge sharing habit.
