Artificial Intelligence-Assisted/Computer Guided Ridge Splitting and Expansion

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare clinically and radiographically the effectiveness of artificial intelligence-assisted/computer-guided ridge splitting and expansion approach (RSEA) versus conventional approach combined with simultaneous implant Placement. The present study included 22 participants, aged 20 to 45, with horizontal ridge deficiencies. After Kafrelsheikh University research ethics committee approval, participants were randomized into 2 groups. The control group patients underwent conventional RSEA with simultaneous implant placement, while the study group patients underwent artificial intelligence-assisted/computer-guided RSEA combined with simultaneous implant Placement. Then the peri-implant bone defects were filled with bone graft in both groups. Quotient of implant stability (QIS), pink esthetic score (PES), horizontal bone dimensions (HBDs), labial marginal bone level (LMBL), peri-implant vertical bone defect depth (PVBDD) and peri-implant bone density (PBD) were recorded and assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 months post-operatively. All implants were successful and had no complications during the evaluation period. By the end of the study period after 1-year, the study group demonstrated a significant improvement in regard to QIS, PES, HBDs, LMBL, PVBDD and PBD over the control group (P<0.001). Utilizing artificial intelligence combined with computer guided RSEA was found to be very efficient and conservative for treating horizontal ridge deficiencies with enhanced peri-implant soft tissue, hard tissue and esthetic outcomes. As we know, this was the first trial utilizing artificial intelligence combined with computer guided surgery for RSEA and simultaneous implant insertion for reconstruction of horizontally compromised alveolar ridge defects.
