Artificial Intelligence and Disability Support

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping disability support across healthcare, education, and institutional systems by enabling adaptive and scalable accessibility solutions. While the broader literature on AI in disability is expanding, applications specific to hearing impairment remain fragmented. This chapter synthesises current evidence on AI-enabled technologies and their role in enhancing communication, participation, and institutional efficiency. Technologies such as real-time speech recognition, sign language processing, and adaptive communication interfaces demonstrate growing potential to reduce communication barriers and improve inclusion. At the systems level, AI facilitates more efficient service delivery and data-informed decision-making. However, challenges, including limited datasets, ethical concerns, infrastructural constraints, and inequities in access, continue to shape implementation outcomes, particularly in low-resource settings. A forward-looking framework grounded in inclusive design and responsible governance is proposed to guide sustainable adoption.
