Applications of Tooth Graft in Treating Peri-Implant Bone Defects

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to identify the different types of tooth graft materials used in dentistry, recognize the advantages and limitations of using tooth grafts compared to other bone grafting materials for peri-implant reconstruction, discuss the potential cost-effectiveness of using tooth grafts compared to other bone grafting materials. Compare and contrast the use of tooth grafts with other regenerative approaches and to explore the future directions and ongoing research in the field of tooth graft applications in dental implant therapy. MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library and citation databases were searched until August 2, 2023 to identify randomized controlled trials that employed tooth grafts for treatment of peri-implant bone defects. Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria, seven of which were randomized controlled trials. Tooth graft showed equivalent primary and secondary implant stability when compared to Bio-Oss. Implant survival, marginal bone loss and bone density showed non-significant improvement of tooth graft groups over control groups. Within this study limitations, tooth grafts is an effective option for bone augmentation around dental implants, with acceptable implant stability, marginal bone loss, and incidences of complications and failure.
