Smart home automation systems employ IoT technologies and microcontrollers to improve security, accessibility, and efficiency in residential spaces. These systems incorporate sensors, actuators, and wireless communication protocols to enable remote monitoring and control of household devices, allowing for enhanced connectivity and seamless operation of various home appliances. This paper conducts a survey on applications in smart home automation focusing on enhancing security, accessibility, and efficiency through IoT and microcontroller integration. Data was systematically collected from Scopus using specific keywords, yielding 49 relevant documents on “Arduino Based Smart Home Automation System” after applying filters for year, subject area, and document type. The abstracts were reviewed, and key details such as issues, methods, and study contexts were summarized for further analysis. Key noticeable aspects in the reviewed literature, include the integration of diverse hardware components such as Arduino boards, Raspberry Pi, and microcontrollers to control home appliances and ensure security. This paper also proposes for research areas that can be further investigated.
