Microbial secondary metabolites (SMs) are low-molecular-weight compounds produced by bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes during the idiophase of growth, not essential for primary survival but conferring significant ecological advantages. These molecules represent a cornerstone of modern biotechnology, with profound applications across human health, agriculture, and industry. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the diverse applications of microbial SMs, beginning with their most renowned role as sources of antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines), which revolutionized medicine. Beyond antimicrobials, their utility extends to potent anticancer agents (e.g., doxorubicin, bleomycin), immunosuppressants critical for organ transplantation (e.g., cyclosporine A), and cholesterol-lowering statins (e.g., lovastatin). In agriculture, SMs serve as successful bio-pesticides, herbicides, and plant growth promoters, underpinning sustainable farming practices. Industrially, they are sources of pigments, biosurfactants, and bioplastics. However, the development and commercialization of these compounds are ensnared within a complex web of legal and ethical challenges. This review critically examines the central legal implications, including the intricate framework of intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks), the regulatory hurdles for approval (particularly for drugs and agrochemicals), and the contentious issue of bioprospecting. Bioprospecting, often targeting biodiversity-rich developing countries, raises critical questions regarding sovereignty, benefit-sharing, and biopiracy, as governed by international agreements like the Nagoya Protocol. This review concludes that while microbial secondary metabolites hold immense, untapped potential for addressing global challenges, realizing this potential requires navigating a delicate balance between incentivizing innovation through robust legal protection and ensuring equitable and ethical access to genetic resources.
