An Adoption of Zero-Trust Technique in Hierarchical WSNs - A Review

Abstract

Several studies have reported a growing challenge of sophisticated denial-of-service (DoS) and persistent threatsin hierarchical wireless networks. These attacks expose critical organizational data and network resources to unauthorized access. The most adopted perimeter defense security model is unable to defend against these sophisticated security challenges in WSNs. The zero-trust technique is the most preferred in wireless networks to secure sensitive data. This model uses ‘never trust, always verify’ principle. This article reviews and analyzes various wireless sensor networks hierarchical routing protocols and lightweight authentication techniques in relation to the zerotrust technique. This work highlights key causes of migration from traditional defense technique to zero-trust technique. This article highlights the zero-trust technique key elements and examines its adoption rate by different computing fields. Andlastly, we identify the common challenges and propose future techniques for effective adoption of zero-trust technique.
