AI-Driven Drilling in Mining: Systematic Review of Smart Technologies, Challenges, and Pathways to Sustainable Automation

Abstract

Drilling is at the heart of mining, shaping how we extract resources and understand the earth beneath us. As artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and automation continue to evolve, they’re opening new possibilities for smarter, safer, and more efficient drilling. This study explores the latest advancements in mining drilling operations, uncovering both challenges and opportunities for innovationBased on the PRISMA model, we reviewed 458 studies articles from Scopus and Web of Science, showing how AI-driven analytics, real-time monitoring, and autonomous drilling technologies are transforming the industry. These innovations aren't only enhancing accuracy and productivity they're leading the way toward more sustainable and intelligent mining techniques. By introducing these cutting-edge solutions into focus, this research offers practical guidance for the future of drilling, ensuring mining operations are more secure, efficient, and aligned with the interests of both the people and the planet.
