Introducing AI into the assessment of foreign language tasks has the potential to change educational practices by automating grading and enhancing learning. We have experienced using AI to generate and grade foreign language assessments, especially through the system's capacity to provide large-scale, uniform, and objective scoring. One of the possibilities discussed is the more systematic use of AI technologies that are already employed in trials to estimate proficiency. The chapter discusses a review of some AI technologies currently used in language assessment and their inherent benefits of time-saving and personalised feedback, as well as challenges around reliability and the need for human supervision. By reviewing existing literature and case studies, the chapter seeks to articulate the best practices that could be employed by educators and institutions in harnessing AI to evaluate language in the most constructive way that can have a positive correlation with improved educational outcomes and enhanced learner engagement.
