Agroecological Strategies for Insect Pollinator Conservation

Abstract

In the face of intensifying climate change, the resilience of agricultural systems and food security depend on the health and diversity of insect pollinators. This chapter presents a nuanced exploration of the multifaceted impacts of climate change on insect pollinators, including geographic range shifts, phenological changes, and altered interspecies interactions, which collectively threaten pollination services and, by extension, crop yields and human nutrition. The proposal of an integrated agroecological and socioeconomic approach to pollinator conservation is at the heart of this discourse. The chapter also highlights the economic and social benefits of pollinator conservation and proposes policy recommendations that align with national agricultural strategies and international environmental commitments. Through a synthesis of current research and case studies, the chapter identifies critical knowledge gaps and defines future research directions, emphasizing the need for comprehensive monitoring and assessment of insect pollinator populations and the services they provide.
