The production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass has emerged as a promising avenue for sustainable energy generation. This chapter explores two key platform technologies for utilizing lignocellulosic waste: bioethanol production and hydrothermal carbonization. Bioethanol, the most widely produced liquid biofuel, accounts for 85% of global biofuel production, with the United States and Brazil leading in production. The process involves biological pretreatment of lignocellulosic substrates to convert them into fermentable sugars, followed by fermentation into bioethanol. Biological pretreatment offers several advantages, including high yield potential, cost-effectiveness, and mild reaction conditions, making it a viable alternative to conventional methods like acid or alkaline hydrolysis. Additionally, the residual lignocellulosic waste from bioethanol production can be processed via hydrothermal carbonization to produce hydrochar and bio-oil, maximizing resource utilization and minimizing waste generation. Hydrochar, a carbon-rich solid, serves as a renewable solid fuel, while bio-oil, a liquid mixture of valuable organic compounds, can be utilized directly as fuel oil or as a renewable feedstock. The integration of bioethanol production with hydrothermal carbonization exemplifies a circular approach to biomass utilization, enhancing economic feasibility and environmental sustainability. This chapter highlights the technological advancements, economic incentives, and environmental benefits of these processes, contributing to the development of a sustainable bioenergy industry.
