Advancing Policy and Science: A Game Changer in the Adoption of Genome Editing Technology in the Continent of Africa

Abstract

Historical gaps in policy and scientific capacity in some developing nations create the primary obstacle to the adoption of emerging technologies, necessitating a balance between trade-offs and synergies. Genome editing is a revolutionary scientific tool that supports the goals of Agenda 2063 for a more prosperous and food-secure Africa. This article examines the landscape of genome editing applications and regulations across the African continent, the collaborative efforts for capacity building, the significance of partnerships, and the initiatives by the African Union Development Agency – NEPAD aimed at facilitating member states’ adoption of genome editing to achieve the ambitious goal of eradicating hunger. We conclude by identifying the essential components required to ensure the safe and advantageous implementation of this technology across the continent.
