Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical emergency which arises due to blockage of the small intestine. It may lead to serious sequalae if not managed appropriately. SBO continues to be a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality accounting for 15% of hospital admissions in the evaluation of acute abdominal pain in the USA and forms 20% of cases needing surgical intervention ( 1 ). In the UK, SBO is the indication for 51% of all emergency laparotomies performed per year ( 2 ).
