A sociological review of gender equity in agricultural development: global trends and lessons for U.S. policy

Abstract

This sociological review explores gender equity in agricultural development, analyzing global literature to examine how social structures, cultural norms, and gender roles impact women’s access to resources, decision-making power, and economic opportunities. Gender disparities in agriculture remain pronounced, particularly in regions where entrenched cultural norms and societal structures limit women's participation and authority. The review highlights cases where gender-focused agricultural policies have improved gender parity, illustrating the importance of tailored interventions in transforming societal attitudes and economic roles. In regions across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, policies that prioritize resource accessibility, equitable land rights, and female-centric training programs have notably enhanced women's contributions to agriculture, often correlating with broader socio-economic gains. Drawing from these global experiences, this review provides policy recommendations for the U.S., emphasizing the need to address structural barriers that women in agriculture face. Recommendations include implementing policies that support women’s access to land ownership, credit, and agricultural technology, alongside programs that facilitate equitable participation in decision-making bodies. Additionally, policies that address rural women's labor burdens through improved childcare and healthcare access could increase female engagement in sustainable agricultural practices. Future research directions are essential for deepening understanding of the social dynamics that sustain gender inequities in agriculture. Key research areas include investigating how shifting social norms influence women’s participation in agricultural activities, assessing the role of gender-based agricultural programs in altering power structures, and examining sociological factors that affect the sustainability and effectiveness of gender-inclusive agricultural policies. This research could inform targeted, sustainable interventions and foster an environment where gender equity in agriculture is both attainable and enduring.
