A Review of FACTS Devices in The Performance Enhancement of Wind Farm with Grid Requirements

Abstract

Wind energy penetration grew as a result of load changes and grid requirements. Power system faces many challenges such as fault rid through capability, voltage instability and power quality standards like restrictions on harmonic distortion, phase imbalance, and flicker. Reactive power regulation, voltage management, power factor adjustment have been the most important requirements for the stability of the grid. An unexpected occurrence, such a generator or line tripping, may cause the power flow to fluctuate. This could lead to an overload on certain lines, posing a potential threat on security of the system. Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) controllers are implemented to regulate the flow of electricity by regulating the three primary properties of any transmission line: phase angle, voltage magnitude, and impedance. They can be used to control the network's voltage and improve its stability. The categorization of FACTS devices depends on where they are connected and also categorized based on the types of utilized power electronic devices. This paper presents FACTS devices as a vital solution to these problems, the work introduces some types of FACTS devices and comparison results to show the best choice, ideal location and specifications for the implemented device. Results of this paper show that UPFC is the best choice.
