A Mobile-Based Architectural Framework and Evaluation for Flipped Learning in Open and Distance Education

Abstract

The flipped learning system is a method of teaching and a type of blended learning that makes an inverse of the traditional learning environment in classroom setting. Existing flipped learning systems do not properly put measures in place to ensure that communication between teachers and students are intact, even in an open and distance education. The objective of this study is to design a mobile-based architectural framework for flipped learning in open and distance education. In designing the application, schematic diagram, Unified Modeling Language such as class and activity diagrams were engaged. The system was implemented within the Xamarin studio for android development using the C# Programming language, Firebase and Mongo DB as the online database service. The application gives the power and learning means to the student in a manner that they can conduct all academic educational services within a user-friendly mobile environment. The application was evaluated using cognitive walkthrough strategy. The results of the usability evaluation suggest that the prototype application presented in this chapter has "good usability" based on the total mean rating. When deployed, the application would help immensely with making classroom activities more engaging and easy to navigate.
